Introducing The Dive Group

The MBTBC Dive Group is a friendly and casual group who get together for Dives in Moreton Bay and beyond. Dive Group Captain Adrian Leech said that the Group is open to all Club Members who are interested in experiencing the water and sea life in a whole new light.

The Dive Group is a focal point for those interested in local diving. They hold a monthly meeting so Members with a common interest can get together, meet each other and plan a Dive. The Group is often acknowledged by new Members to the club, as Diving can be considered a unique opportunity that a lot of Member’s haven’t found to be affordable and accessible before.

On the first Wednesday of every month, the Group gets together at the Clubhouse for 6:30pm dinner followed by a 7:30pm meeting. This is a chance for the Group to coordinate upcoming Dives. Adrian says that you don’t need to own a boat or gear.  While the Group doesn’t have equipment to lend out, sourcing your own gear is easy.  There are several good dive shops in the area that can help out with hire equipment.

A key element to all water activities is safety and the Dive Group considers this first and foremost. Adrian believes, “Safety is paramount. Diving is certainly a safe pastime and there are a few simple rules to follow to ensure everyone goes home with only the best experiences. Personally, I prefer to forego a dive than to dive in rough weather, heavy seas, or strong current. It’s better to come back another day and enjoy a dive.” So while the calendar can occasionally change at the last minute, the memories of a Dive are only ever happy ones. While this is a Group for every level of Diver, Adrian recommends “as a minimum you should have done an Open Water Diver’s Certificate from a reputable agency. A Dive course teaches the physiology of diving – what happens to your body while you are under water.  While Diving is very safe, you do need to understand and follow certain rules. I expect that all Dive shops offer a PADI/NAUI/SSI or similar courses. I would recommend courses that offer four open water Dives. The more experience the better. Once you have your open water certificate there is a raft of courses for the keen Diver.”

“There are so many fantastic Dive spots within a day’s drive of Brisbane. From Julian Rocks (Byron Bay) to our south, moving up to Cook Island off Fingal Head and into Moreton Bay with the Curtin Artificial Reef, Tangalooma and even out to Flat Rock, Shag Rock and Shark Alley onto Flinder’s Reef – equivalent to the Great Barrier Reef only in our backyard. Further north is ex HMAS Brisbane which is definitely worth more than one visit,” says Adrian.

Quick Facts about The Dive Group
• Anyone can Dive. Age is never a problem. It comes down to attitude. If you are physically fit enough and comfortable with the equipment, then you can Dive.
• You don’t need a Boat. There are many generous Group Members who are willing to share their boat and get the Group to a great spot.
You don’t need your own gear. While the Group doesn’t have equipment to lend out, sourcing your own gear is easy.  There are several good dive shops in the area that can help out with hire equipment.
Keep in touch. Just let Adrian know if you want to join a Dive. He acts as a contact point. Once you are interested in a Dive you will be given the contact details of the person organizing the dive.
