Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club History
It started with a small advertisement in the “Wynnum Herald” placed by Bill Lamond and John Harper, which resulted in this Club growing into what it is today. The first meeting took place in John Harper’s Service Station, Tingal Road, Wynnum.
The first Chairman was Bill Lamond whilst John Harper was the first Secretary who later became the longest serving Commodore of this Club and first Chairman of the MBTBC Marina Company. The first treasurer was Lance Nichols who is part of the boating industry.
With little co-operation from the government of the day, the group of men that met, laid a boat ramp using old railway sleepers at Wynnum Creek to launch their boats.
The second meeting took place soon after, on 6th June 1960. The Club pennants were ordered and the colours of Black and Gold were adopted. It didn’t take those early members long before they were organising the first fishing competition to be held on 17th July 1960. Trips around the Bay were organised to familiarise newcomers to the sport of boating and the area of Moreton Bay.
By October 1962 the Club was looking for land. They wrote to the Brisbane City Council “re land at the mouth of Wynnum Creek for a base to this Club for the purpose of building a boat house and having private launching facilities etc.”
The base at Wynnum Creek never eventuated but reclaimed land became available for lease at Manly Harbour. In July 1973, the Club laid its own six lane boat ramp, together with a security fence around the property which was acquired from the Harbours and Marine Department. An additional area of ground was acquired in July 1974.
A two storey Clubhouse was built by Ernest Day & Co and was opened on 22nd March 1975 by the then Premier of Queensland, Sir Jo Bjelke Petersen. Five years later the Clubhouse was extended to double the size. On 18th March 2000 Honorary Life Members George Davie and John Harper duly opened the newly refurbished and air-conditioned Clubhouse.
In 1993 the MBTBC Marina was officially opened. This world class marina boasts 333 berths ranging from 10m to 17m mono and multi-hull berths, hardstand area, Shipyard, laundry facilities, fuel and gas availability.
As a result of member participation and committee commitment this club has achieved a membership of 3,500.
