The Dive Group is back in action again. In July members traveled to Bundaberg for a weekend and had five dives on the Bargara artificial reef, located about five kilometers north-east of Elliott Heads. The reef which consists of a number of old aircraft, a lighthouse vessel, various other bits and pieces is home to a myriad of fish with large cod, sweetlip and many ornamental coral fish being the feature of most dives.
A highlight of one dive was being buzzed by a group of three dolphins in about 16 metres of water. The dolphins made several high speed passes around the divers before disappearing into the distance. The Bargara artificial reef is quite different to the Curtin artificial reef in Moreton Bay in that it has a number of separated discrete sites in the one general area which makes it an interesting and diverse dive site and well worth a visit. The attached photos showing some highlights of the dives were taken by group member Adrian Leech.
In August it was time to dive with the sharks and a great dive was had at Shark Alley at Flat Rock, North Stradbroke Island. It was a fantastic dive with at least 10 Grey Nurse sharks being encountered at close range. The shark dive was followed up by a dive at Shag Rock where large sting rays and stone fish were encountered by some of the divers.
The next major dive planned is a dive on the recently sunk HMAS Brisbane off Mooloolaba . It should be a memorable experience and one we can report on in next month’s magazine.
The group is hoping to increase the number of dive outings in for the rest of the year so don’t forget if you want to go diving with us contact us via the club Forum on the link below.
